For centuries, glass was an exclusive commodity available only to the few. Glassmakers’ secrets were closely guarded, and the glassmakers themselves were regarded almost as alchemists. Only recently has glass become commonplace, yet its production still has something mysterious about it. To see that “something” with your own eyes, the best thing to do is to travel to the Polish capital of glass – Krosno in the Subcarpathian region – and tour the one-of-a-kind Glass Heritage Centre with an audio guide. The Centre is located on Krosno’s charming Market Square, surrounded by historic townhouses. Yet it presents this long-standing tradition in a thoroughly modern way. With headphones on, we walk through several floors of the Centre, listening to a professional audio guide. Among other things, it takes us to a glassworks with real glass-melting furnaces and shows how glass is worked and how finished products are made. An additional attraction is a visit to the part of the Centre where a whole range of glass marvels is on display. You may well leave enchanted!
