The name Westerplatte is synonymous with a heroic fight despite there being no hope of victory. During Poland's defensive war in 1939, there were many such Westerplattes. One of them can be found in the Polish mountains, south of Żywiec, in Węgierska Górka. There are bunkers there whose defence against the German attack went down in history as the “Westerplatte of the South”.
Open to visitors with an audio guide is Fort “Wędrowiec”, the command bunker of the 151st Fortress Company. The soldiers of this unit defended the passage through Węgierska Górka into the interior of the country against the Germans attacking from the south. The fierce fighting continued until the afternoon of 3 September. The audio guide tells this story in detail; it also shows the interior of the shelter, explaining the functions of the individual rooms, and reveals the secrets of how the bunker was built.
