Sulejów lies a dozen or so kilometres from Piotrków Trybunalski, in the Łódź Voivodeship. As early as the 12th century, that is eight hundred years ago, the Polish duke Casimir the Just brought Cistercian monks to what was then a remote area, and over the years they built an impressive monastery complex.Today in Sulejów you can admire the Romanesque Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Thomas of Canterbury, as well as the monastery and farm buildings; the numerous defensive towers also catch the eye.It is worth visiting the monastery museum with the audio guide, where many mementoes related to its history have been collected.
