Góra Świętej Anny in Upper Silesia is a place well worth visiting in every respect. Locals know the name of this village in three languages at once: in Polish, in German as Sankt Annaberg and in Silesian as Świyntŏ Anna or Anaberg, which says a lot about the turbulent history of this corner of the country.
The village, home to around 500 people, stretches largely across the slopes of the volcano of the same name, which was active millions of years ago. Tourists are drawn here by the cult of St Anne with the Virgin and Child and her 15th-century figure renowned for its graces, the beautifully situated sanctuary with its calvary, the 18th-century monastery with its church and the spectacular rock-hewn amphitheatre with seating for 7,000 spectators.
Nature lovers find peace hiking the trails of the local landscape park on the mountain, which rises to 408 m above sea level. Awaiting them are long-disused quarries on the southern slope and small caves.
