Złoty Stok is a small, quiet town on the northern slopes of the Golden Mountains (Góry Złote). It prides itself on being the oldest mining and metallurgical centre in Poland, where centuries ago large quantities of the most coveted metal – gold – were extracted. You can learn about this fascinating history at the unique Złoty Stok Gold Mine museum. After visiting the mine, it is worth setting off on a walk around the town centre accompanied by our audio guide. The starting point is Złoty Stok's Market Square, surrounded by historic tenement houses. Then we wander through the old streets, learning about the town's history and its historic buildings. Remarkably, the street surfaces were once hardened with residues from gold smelting at the local smelter. They certainly still contain traces of the precious metal. So you could say that when exploring Złoty Stok, you are walking on gold.
