Do you know where in Poland the "Chequered Land" (Kraina w Kratę) is? If not, be sure to get in your car, on a train or a bus and head for Słupsk; once you are in this beautiful town, ask about Swołowo and go there as quickly as you can. In Swołowo you will have reached your destination. After touring the Swołowo open-air museum – with an audio guide, of course – you will know almost everything about the "Chequered Land". Swołowo is a Pomeranian village where old houses, barns, stables and other buildings constructed using the half-timbered technique have survived. Their characteristic feature is the special construction of the walls: black beams forming a chessboard pattern with white infill. That is where the name "Chequered Land" comes from.In the open-air museum we recommend visiting, for example, the Albrecht Farmstead. It consists of a spacious farmhouse and farm buildings which together form a quadrangle with an entrance gate. The audio guide takes us back a hundred years and shows how wealthy farmers in Central Pomerania lived and farmed.
