With a population of thirty-five thousand, Oleśnica today remains in the shadow of nearby Wrocław, yet for many centuries it competed with the capital of Lower Silesia as the centre of an independent duchy. In the 21st century, local enthusiasts of the town and its history created a place where that history is cherished and presented in an engaging way. This is the Oleśnica House of Encounters with History (Oleśnicki Dom Spotkań z Historią), which can also be explored with an audio guide. The House stands on Bociania Street in the historic centre of Oleśnica, next to the magnificent castle and the centuries-old Basilica of St John the Apostle. The exhibition is laid out over two floors. The audio guide is rented on the ground floor. It soon leads us to the first room, with a large model reconstructing medieval Oleśnica. Here we learn about the town's early centuries. From the model room we move on to the so-called Media Library with its numerous multimedia stations, and then climb up to the first floor. There we meet the successive crowned heads who ruled the Duchy of Oleśnica, watch an 18th-century theatre performance and delve into the town's recent German and Polish history.
